MINU'PES
CITY COUNCIL
MARCIi 27, 1996
PLANTER Fahey reported that the Community Pride Committee is
PROJECT recommending that the City proceed with the purchase of
decorative planters to be installed at locations around
the City. There are also a couple of groups who are
interested in purchasing and/or maintaining the
planters. Fahey suggested that the Council can either
approve the purchase of the planters or refer the
recommendation to the 10% Committee for prioritization
with other requests. Fahey stated that because of the
work the Community Pride Committee did on this project,
he would like to see it approved at this time.
Morelan asked if the City Administrator was able to
obtain prices from other vendors.
The Administrator replied that he found other vendors
who could manufacture the planters, but not at a
reduced cost. The Administrator reported that the
budget for this project is $3,750, and estimated that
four planters could be purchased for that amount.
Morelan stated that he liked the idea and design of the
planters, but suggested that the project be referred to
the 10% Committee for ranking with other projects.
The City Planner pointed out that the City is currently
seeking proposals for a streetscape project, and
suggested that whoever is hired to do the project would
be recommending planter designs and other street
fixtures. The Planner suggested that the City might
want to hold off on the planter project at this time so
that a consistent design could be defined.
Fahey stated that he would envision using this design
and incorporating it into the Rice Street/Little Canada
Road streetscape.
The City Administrator pointed out that there is an
August lst deadline for submission of streetscape
proposals.
Scalze pointed out that the Community Pride Committee
looked at sample materials and chose the one they did
because it matched the color of the brick on City Hall.
Fahey stated that he did not want to wait until
September to get the planter project moving. Fahey did
not see a problem with one type of planter in the Rice
Street/Little Canada Road area, and another type in the
rest of the City.
14
