MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
APRIL 10, 1996
collection necessary to do so. Donovan reported the
Historical Society has family, church, and school
records and pictures to pull together exhibits. They
also have artifacts from the early St. John's Church
buildings.
Jean Donovan reported the Historical Society currently
is open each Tuesday. However, should an addition be
put onto City Hall, the members would volunteer their
time to have the Historical Society open at least three
days per week. This additional hours will provide the
members with more time to research and catalogue the
records they have.
Fahey recognized it is a lot of work just to organize a
collection. Additional work and thought will be
necessary to put up exhibits which are interesting and
have some sort of theme.
Jean Donovan reported that each of the members has a
particular area of interest, and would put together
exhibits accordingly. Donovan, Tschida, and Kathy
Hanson pointed out there are many records which must be
organized, photocopied and/or catalogued, including the
St. John's cemetery records, family histories and
cross-references reflectinq inter-marriages between the
various families, the Rose Lancette Johnson collection,
to name a few. Donovan reported on the Historical
Society's interest in obtaining a computer to aid in
cataloguing. Hanson pointed out that records which
cannot be replaced are currently stored in a fire-proof
file cabinet. There was some discussion about the
funding for the fire-proof file cabinet, with the
indication that this item would be discussed at
Monday's 10% Committee meeting for cost reimbursement
by the 10% Fund.
Jean Donovan reported that over the period 1989 through
1995, the City has given the Historical Society
$10,400. Their current balance on-hand is $9,993. It
is the Historical Society's feeling that should they be
provided with space at City Hall, these funds would be
used to help furnish the space. Donovan also reported
that current expenditures include various supplies such
as archival sleeves, which are expensive.
Morelan asked how many active members the Historical
Society has.
Jean Donovan replied that the Aistorical Society's
membership roster includes 50 members, of which 20 are
2
