MINi1TES
CITY COUNCIL
JUI~Y 1, 1996
Street to Market Place Drive. Lanes would be 13 feet
in width, plus a 6-foot bike lane, 8-foot boulevards,
and 6-foot sidewalk. The median would be 15 feet in
width reducing down to 4 feet at the left-turn lanes.
These improvements would require 88 feet of right-of-
way.
Schroeder pointed out that further east on Little
Canada Road there is an attractive, narrow quality to
the street. Therefore, from just east of Market Place
Drive to County Road C a two-lane roadway is proposed,
requiring 66 feet of right-of-way. Driving lanes would
be 11 feet wide, plus 6-foot bike lanes, 8-foot
boulevards, and a 6-foot sidewalk. These improvements
would require 66 feet of right-of-way.
Schroeder proposed that at the intersection of Little
Canada Road/County Road C/Lakeshore Avenue, a traffic
circle replace the existing stop signs. Schroeder felt
the traffic circle would improve traffic flow throuqh
the intersection as well as be a means to create a
gateway statement into the redevelopment area.
Schroeder reported that his firm would be discussing
the traffic circle proposal with the County Engineer to
get their reaction to it.
LaValle asked about the ability of commercial vehicles
to navigate around the circle.
Bruce C.hamberlain replied that the circle would be 48
feet wide which would allow any vehicle to do a
complete U-turn.
Morelan stated that he has seen traffic circles of
varying sizes out east, and they seemed to move traffic
well. However, vehicles wanting to make left turns are
forced to go around the circle. Morelan suggested
drivers might not like a circle until they get used to
it. Morelan asked if Hoisington had any data on
current traffic patterns in the area.
Schroeder replied that the County will be doing a
traffic study of the intersection.
Pedersen asked about snowplowing the circle, and also
asked if traffic would lock-up because of the signals
at the freeway.
Schroecler felt the circles are plowed easily. He also
noted there may need to be an adjustment made in the
timing of traffic signals because the circles allow
traffic to flow more freely than stop signs do.
2
