MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
AUGUST 14, 1996
the Sheriff's Department. Additional academies are
planned, and anyone interested should contact the
Department.
McDonald also reported that the Sheriff's Department
recently graduated its second group of Community
Affairs Officers. These individuals joined the program
as volunteers and are now working out in the field on
various projects. Some of these projects include
conducting an observation class for management and
tenants at Montreal Courts, working with management of
Montreal Courts on numbering of parking lots,
evaluating laundry and storage rooms for safety
improvements. Another project CAO's are working on is
interviewing business owners about graffiti problems,
identifying prevention measures, and gathering
information on graffiti vandals.
McDonald reported that the CAO's are making their
presence known and working toward improving the
community.
McDonald also informed the Council of the Department's
efforts in educating the community that spray painting
or defacing private or public property with graffiti is
a crime, and anyone observing this crime should call
911. McDonald reported that if individuals are
identified as committing this crime, the first step
will be for the Sheriff's Department to visit parents
and give them an opportunity to correct the problem.
If it persists, the Sheriff's Department will then
charge the individuals. McDonald felt if this crime is
not stemmed, it will become a serious problem.
Fahey commended the Sheriff's Department for the
innovative ways they are working on crime prevention.
Luey felt the key was to get the community involved.
Luey indicated that graffiti can become a big problem,
it is a crime, and it causes a lot of damage. The CAO
volunteers are following up on this activity and trying
to make an impact.
Scalze reported that she received a phone call from a
resident expressing concern about problems on school
buses and the lack of cooperation from the school
district in addressing these problems.
Luey suggested that problems such as this be directed
to his office. Luey indicated that the Sheriff's
Department and school district will work together in
2
