MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
SEPTEldBER 11, 1996
There is the possibility of adding 3 or more spaces.
Jean Donovan, President of the Historical Society,
reported that they are surprised by the high cost of
the addition. However, the Historical Society needs
space if it is going to continue to work to preserve
the City's past and present.
Pedersen pointed out that the addition would be a
residential-type construction, and asked why the
estimated cost is $316,845.
Kroos replied that most of the additional cost is for
roo£ trusses and transitioning into the existing roof
lines. Kroos indicated that basically the estimator
looked at City Hall construction and applied it to the
addition. Kroos stated that he would hope the price
will decrease in the competitive bid process.
Pedersen asked the cost to bid the project.
It was pointed out that plans and specifications would
have to be prepared before the project could be bid.
Estimated cost of architect and engineer fees is
$26,000.
Fahey asked if the Council approved the project to go
out for bid this evening, would construction be
anticipated for next year.
Kroos replied that that was correct. The time period
between January and March would be the best bidding
climate.
Fahey pointed out that the Historical Society preserves
the heritage of Little Canada. The organization cannot
continue to be housed in the old fire station. It will
either be relegated to operating out of someone~s
garage, or upgraded facilities will be provided. Fahey
felt it would be more costly to construct a free-
standing facility for the Historical Society. The City
Center is a good location for the Historical Society,
and the addition would also help to make additional use
of the Council Chambers. Fahey stated that he
supported the project, and felt that in addition to
funding the project from City funds, charitable
orqanizations as well as the Fire Department should be
approached for donations toward the project. Fahey
felt the City should determine if it can get a funding
commitment from these organizations, as well as look at
City funding sources. Fahey suggested perhaps the 10%
6
