MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 9, 1996
Realtors Association and the answers to questions
listed in the memo from residents. Fahey stated that
he would expect the group home to be a good
neighborhood, and if it is not, the City will react.
Fahey pointed out that the home is currently up to code
and meets City requirements. Fahey assumed the County
licensing body is aware of the temperaments of the
individuals who will be residing in the home as well as
the character of the individuals who will be operating
the home.
One resident asked if AME was licensed to operate only
a Prader-Willi group home, or if the nature of the
group home could be changed.
McGraw reported that he is licensed to operate a group
home for developmentally-disabled individuals.
Jensen was concerned about the group home residents
acting unpredictably, and asked if children running
from house to house with snacks would be approached for
food.
One of the mothers of a Prader-Willi child reported
that these individuals are supervised at all times.
She also indicated that these individuals would not
grab food from ahildren or agressively approach them
for food. The reason these individuals need
supervision is because without it they would fill theiz
refrigerators with food and gorge themselves on it.
These individuals are very aware of their disability
and become frustrated with their handicap. The
individuals also go to school and have jobs, therefore,
are not in the home 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
This mother also reported that the families do take
these children home for visits, on outings, and on
vacations.
Tracy George pointed out that any incidents at the
group home would be required to be reported to the
County.
Fahey reported that staff will provide the neighborhood
with a copy of the minutes and a list of questions and
answers. Fahey indicated the City would expect the
neighbors would let staff know if there are any on-
going issues at the group home.
One of the group home staff inembers pointed out that
they were present at the neighborhood block party with
some of the individuals who will be living at the home.
9
