MINUTES <br />CITY COUNCIL <br />NOVEMBER 19~ 1996 <br />once the Pioneer Park batting cage project is <br />completed, and the funds committed for this project by <br />NSYA are received. Fahey also pointed out that Lake <br />Owasso could be approached as well, especially for <br />projects related to handicapped accessibility. <br />Council discussed expansion of the Pioneer Park parking <br />facilities. The Parks & Recreation Director explained <br />that the project involves the addition of 34 parking <br />spaces on the Centerville Road side of the park as well <br />as an additional entrance for the parking lot. <br />Morelan asked if the additional parking would allow the <br />elimination of the overflow parking lot on the DeSoto <br />Street side of the park. The Director replied that it <br />would not. Morelan felt that the overflow parking did <br />not look good, and was something that the City would <br />not allow a business owner to do. <br />Scalze suggested that the trend for parks around the <br />country is to go to grass parking lots for overflow <br />parking. <br />Morelan suggested that if this is something the City <br />wants to continue, then the ordinance should be changed <br />to allow this type of parking. <br />Scalze stated that she did not support spending money <br />on additional parking in Pioneer Park given that the <br />on-street parking on DeSoto Street is not used. <br />Pedersen indicated that he would support the additional <br />parking given that this project comes before the <br />Council each year, therefore, there must be a need for <br />it. <br />5calze pointed out that the Parks & Recreation <br />Commission voted to support the additional parking just <br />because they were tired of debating the project. <br />Fahey pointed out that when the field <br />Pioneer Park was installed, it was se <br />the idea that state tournaments, etc. <br />at the park.
