MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JANUARY 22~ 1997
Scalze felt sheds should be placed behind the rear of a
structure.
Morelan felt that ideally a shed should be set back a
certain distance from the front of the house. However,
if a shed is visible from the street, perhaps it will
be maintained better.
Pedersen felt that at a minimum a shed should be placed
behind the half-way point of a structure and not even
with the front of the structure.
Scalze felt that side yard placement depended on the
distance between homes. Scalze pointed out that
someone might have a deck or screened porch adjacent to
their side yard and would not want to be looking out at
a shed.
Morelan stated that most people have their decks in the
back yard. He also noted that if a shed were placed in
the rear yard, it could still be adjacent to the side
lot line.
Scalze agreed, but pointed out that the shed would not
be next to the principal structure.
Pedersen pointed out that his concern is the view from
the street indicating that the entire neighborhood is
affected when a shed is placed adjacent to the front of
a house. In the back yard, only the adjacent neighbors
are affected by the shed.
Fahey felt it was a question of how much the City wants
to legislate. Fahey felt most property owners would
place their sheds where they are least obtrusive to
their neighbors.
Pedersen felt sheds should be behind the principle
structure, and limited to rear yards.
Fahey asked if the intent was that existing sheds in
side yards would be grandfathered in.
Pedersen agreed that existing sheds would be
grandfathered, and that the ordinance would apply to
new sheds.
The City Administrator pointed out that currently the
setback for sheds is 10 feet. If the ordinance is
adopted granting a 3 foot setback and limiting sheds to
rear yards, those sheds that currently existing in side
7
