MINUTES
CTTY COUNCIL
JUNE 24, 1998
Dick Cossack, Gordies' Pl1ce, pointed out that Gordies' western property
line is only 10 to 15 feet from the condos, and putting up screening along
that property line would block in the lower condos. Screening adjacent to
the volleyball court would interfere with snowplowin~. Cossack also
pointed out that there has been only one complaint about the volleyball
court.
Morelan indicated that he agreed with the concept of screening between
residential and commercial, but questioned whether screening would be
effective in this case.
The City Planner agreed it would be difficult to totally and completely
screen. One option would be to p11nt trees along the property line.
However, given that tlie volleyba(1 use is intermittent and seasonal, this
may be too extreme. The Planner suggested that some taller shrubs may
do a reasonable job of containin~ the activity. The ,Planner recommended
that screening should be as near the western edge of the court as possible.
Morelan reported that he l~as stopped at Gordies to observe the volleyball
court while it is in use. Morelan did not f'eel there was much noise coming
from the court, and suggested that the cars parl<ed along the western side
of the court were a naturll screen. Morelan stated that in observing the
court in play, he did not see how screening of the court would improve the
situation.
Merwin Lamb, 179 E, Little Canada Road, reported that he lives on the
second level ofFluer Roy11 facing the volleybali court. Lamb reported
that he has never had a problem with the lights or noise coming from the
volleyball games. I~'lay is always stopped by 10 P.M. Lamb felt tl~at
screenin~ along the property line would blocl< much of the view froin tl~e
tirst-floor condos. Lamb felt that volleyball was a good activity and
indicated that he enjoys watching the play at Gordies'.
There was no one else present from the general public wishing to
comment on this matter.
Upon motion by LaVaile, seconded by Morel~n, the public hearing was
closed.
Fahey asked if the CUP could be reviewed periodically to ensure that
everything is operating smooti~ly. Fahey suggested that if it is not, the
City may want to impose a screening requireme~~t.
The City Planner agreed that the City had the authority to reserve the right
to review the CUP if it deems necessary.
3
