MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 14, 2009
yard, and are a danger to children. Flipp felt it was time to take action azld
do deer control. Flipp reported that he has used repellents and found they
do not work Flipp reported that the device that Mr. Waite brought in this
evening works pretty well, but noted that he would have to have several of
them to control deer on his property. Flipp also noted that the reason the
deer are eating so many plants, is that the population is too large and they
are starving. Flipp again stated that something needs to be done to reduce
the population.
Keis noted that this is not an easy thing, but felt there is a problem. Keis
stated that he supports moving forward with the first hunt and then
evaluating that hunt once it is completed. Keis indicated that he supported
the hmlt by the MBRB, but was concerned about opening it up to private
property owners.
McGraw stated that he was in agreement with working with the MBRB,
and noted that the agreement is very comprehensive. McGraw noted that
other communities have conducted similar hunts with the MBKB and he
has not noted any publicity about problems. McGraw stated that for him it
was an easy decision to proceed with the hunt. He indicated that while he
likes the animals, people should be able to enjoy their property without
having to invest a lot of money in it to protect iti. McGraw noted that the
City has received several complaints about the abundance of deer, and
feels the herd should be thinned out to a comfortable level.
Johnson questioned the hunt in the area proposed noting that Moriarty
identified the problem as being in northeast Little Canada. Blesener
responded that at this point this is the largest piece of property that the
City can assemble for a hunt. 'T'he Administrator reported that he has
reviewed maps of the City and agreed that without the Sculley property,
this is the largest hunt site that could be assembled. The Administrator
indicated that the City has received complaints from people living in both
areas.
There was discussion on whether or not a limit should be put on the
number of deer that could be taken. While the Council felt picking a
number would be somewhat a~•bitrary, they agreed to place a limit of 12
antlerless deer. 'The Administrator indicated that he would modify the
agreement accordingly.
Flipp asked why bucks would not be taken. The Administrator noted that
more can be done for controlling the population by taking antlerless deer.
Waite expressed concern about the hunters leaving their stands up. The
Administrator indicated that the stands would be removed between the two
day hunts and indicated that hunters would be using removable climbing
systems. The property would be posted when hunting was in progress.
10
