MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission

November 5, 2009
Stacie Stanley introduced herself as the former teacher who was also the leader of the Quest
for Power group that initially presented the basketball proposal to the commission. She
commented that she was extremely proud of the members of the group and knows that they
have the potential to be future leaders of our community. She, too, thanked the commission
members for following tlu~ough with the group's basketball court suggestion. Sanders spoke
on behalf of the commission and thanked the group for bringing them this suggestion.
Ms. Bradbury living at 3024 Ontario Road asked Sanders what the total cost would be to
complete this project. Sanders replied that the estimated cost for tho %z court basketball court
would be between $10,000 - $20,000 or possibly more if they expanded the court size. He
estimated the cost for the replacement of the playground equipment to be between $40 -$50
thousand dollars range. T'he additional walkways would be estimated at $5,000.
Bradbury asked when the city would be doing this project if it is approved. Sanders stated
that if the City Council approved the project it could begin as early as next spring with the
replacement of the playground equipment.
Pearson asked if some of the current equipment could be repaired now as it might take some
time before the new equipment is installed. There is a missing board that currently needs
replacing on the stairs. Morelan will check to see if a new step has been ordered to replace
the broken one.
Pearson also asked if the city would consider removing the little timber wall as he considers
it a hazard for little children.
Tommy Oern eonunented further on the placement of the basketball court, saying he, too,
thinks it should be placed further to the north so it does not cut into the open area that is
being used for other sports, like football and baseball.
Joriman commented on the placement of the new walking paths. He thinks they are too close
to the bushes and a possible hazard with people jumping out from behind the bushes.
Morelan commented that they try to keep at least a mower's width away from the brush, an
approximate 10' clearance. He stated that the city has already removed a large amount of
overgrown brush in that area.
Joriman thanked the city and commission for the great city resource -the quality paths and
riā¢ails within the city - as he uses them daily. Merrill agreed with Joriman and told his story
of seeing the path cleared before the street was cleared after a huge snow storm!
Jamie Waterhouse commented on what a nice addition Rondeau Park is to that neighborhood.
Morelan reminded everyone that the next commission meeting will be on December 3 if they
wish to continue to see the progress of this Thunder Bay Park project.
