MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
November 5, 2009
OLD
BUSINESS: OPTIONS FOR RECOGNITION OF LCRA
Morelan checked and fowld the cost to having a plaque made to recognize the Little Canada
Recreation Association would be approximately $75.00. Morelan will send a request for
funding of this plaque to the city.
PIONEER PARK - CENTEI2VILLE ROAD ENTRANCE IMPROVEMENTS
Sanders stated that it is almost impossible to maintain flowers in the bad soil located at this
park entrance area. He is recommending building some limestone planters, eight foot
square, about 3 to 4 feet high, aild adding good soil and colorful annual plants in the spring.
He stated one could be built in front of the wood fence and three more along the north side
of the driveway entrance. There is very limited room for any plantings as it already has crab
apple ri~ees and signage, too. He thinks the limestone planters would be easier to maintain
aiid keep watered.
Sullivan commented that she thought limestone planters would be an excellent idea and
would add some great color to the front entrance of the park. Morelan said the city park
crew already does watering of many planters throughout the city and these planters could be
added to their maintenance list to water regularly. The city currently purchases many annual
plants every spring and the needed amount to fill these planters could be added to that list.
Maida asked if the city would put grass in the area where the prairie plants are now. Sanders
would recommend to the city to remove the prairie plants, replant them in different locations
and resod that area of the park. Steinert asked if Sanders could provide pictures of these
limestone planters to the commission at the next meeting. Sanders stated he would provide
some pictures for the commissioners. Lolmaugh inquired if we could purchase these
planters instead of building them. Sanders said they would need to be built with chucks of
limestone and filled with good soil Maida asked if we could use these same planters at
other parks within the city to have uniformity throughout the parks. Sanders stated he had
not thought about that, but stated that limestone is used at Spooner Park now.
Sullivan asked if there is a sign at the Pioneer Centerville Road entrance. Sanders said there
was one there now made of wood and set at an angle. Sullivan asked if we should put a
planter by the sign to draw more attention to it. Sanders it was not currently planned to put a
planter by the sign but he would look further into that idea. Sullivan commented that
Roseville has flowers by their park signs aild it adds to the appearance of the sign. Morelan
said they would check into her suggestion.
OTHER: Vice Chair Steinwail announced that the terms of office for Linda Fahey and Katie
Lolmaugh will expire at the end of the year. She suggested that if these commissioners
wished to continue to serve on the commission that they submit their letter of intent to
Morelan before the council meeting on December 16th.
Youth Activities Programs Registration Form for basketball and gymnastics were distributed
Page 5 of 6
