MINUTES

Parks &r Recreation Commission

April 1, 2010
OTHER Chair Pahey asked if the details with the Richie Development had been worked out with
having the lots partially in the cities of both Maplewood and Little Canada. Morelan stated he
assumes it has all been resolved with the two cities as the project has been approved and
construction has begun. Morelan also stated that there will be a 20 foot easement granted for
a possible future trail. Chair Fahey confirmed that the city would be receiving the park
charge fee for this new development.
Morelan commented that the Little Canada Recreation Association approved the new
scoreboard for the Gilbertson ballfield at their last meeting. The scoreboard will be the old
fashioned style where the numbers and letters are hand set and is being handmade by a local
resident.
The Spooner Upper and Lower shelters are almost completely filled for weekend rentals for
the summer months. Sullivan inquired about the rental fees for each park Morelan said the
cost for the Spooner Upper shelter is $l05 per weekend day and Spooner Lower is $43 for
a~iy day. The city also rents out the east side of Pioneer Park on Desoto Street for $33 per
day and, on a very rare occasion because of it not being set up for picnics, have also rented
the Main Shelter area of Pioneer Park.
Because of the early spring Morelan reported work has already begun in the parks. The
tennis nets are ah•eady placed on the tennis courts. Toilets are currently mravailable in the
parks as staff is currently negotiating prices with different vendors for the season rentals.
The improvements on the Waterworks Trail are at a stand still because of issues with St. Paul
Regional Water Services and the railroad over liability issues Morelan reported.
Morelan said the summer youth activities are in full swing with seven teams for youth
baseball, the same as last year. "I'he 55 Alive Driving Course is filled for the morning session
on April 19, but there are still open seats available for the evening 4-hour refresher on
April 20 and the 8-hour beginner course on April 17.
Morelan invited everyone to the Market Place Morning Talks held at the Marketplace Bingo
Hall on April 14 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. There will be free blood pressure tests from 8:45 to
9:20 with the Healthy Breakfast ideas as the main program for this month. Food will be
prepared for sampling. This program is co-sponsored by flee Roseville Area Senior Program,
Little Canada Parks and Recreation Department, Golden Living Center- Lake Ridge,
Lyngblomsten Health Care Facility and Rose of Sharon Manor. Complimentary treats and
coffee are provided every month by the LCRA and LC Bingo Hall.
Morelan recommended the commissioners schedule a spring tour in conjunction with their
May 6`~' meeting, meeting at the city hall parking lot at 6:00 p.m. Steinert agreed and
requested it be scheduled for next meeting. Morelan said he and Sanders would plan for the
parks to visit, which will include the Thunderbay Park and the main entrance to Pioneer Park.
