MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
April 7, 2011
of the city, to include parts of Wisconsin. They plan to charge a fee of $150.00 per season.
There will be some city costs involved with maintenance. He reported that the dates were
selected to not conflict with surrounding cities that currently have farmer's markets
established in their city. The City plans to send out notices of our market to the members of
the Minnesota Farmer's Market Association, along with articles in the Review newspaper and
Le Petit Canadien newsletter.
Slain asked if there would be advertising signage put along Rice Street. Morelan did not
think that would be necessary as other forms of advertising would be done. Morelan was
asked how many vendors they could expect to set up their wares. Morelan guessed there
would probably be eight to ten sellers. In comparison, the City of Shoreview has around fifty
vendors annually. Sullivan commented that White Bear Lake has a nice farmer's market that
typically has around 20 vendors. Morelan said Katie McGinnity has done most of the
research with this new project venture.
Sanders asked Morelan if he has ever received requests for a community garden space.
Morelan replied that he has not received any requests from the residents. The Commissioners
were quite surprised of that fact, especially since many city residents live in apartments,
townhomes, condos or mobile homes.
Morelan also distributed the annual tree sale flier sponsored by the Friends of the Parks.
Additional fliers would be left in the lobby of city hall.
Morelan reported he has been at several meetings with Ramsey County personnel concerning
a website link for GIS accessibility to all the Ramsey County parks, ball fields and other
recreational facility locations. Ramsey County received a grant to design and fund this
project. They have been working on this project for over a year and they will be meeting the
end of April with all participating city staff members to finalize the GIS link.
Don Gagne, a member of the I- Iistorical Society, has been planting and caring for the plants at
the south enhance of Grist Mill Park for several years. He has volunteered to do it again
this year unless someone else comes forward to assist or take over the project. Before Gagne,
both Jean Donovan and Kathy Hansen have taken care of this flower area.
The Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a bus trip to the Minnesota Twins game
on May 24th• Tickets are sold out for this function. They will be leaving from Jimmy's in
Vadnais Heights at 6:00 p.m. Norgard commented a resident had inquired as to why the bus
was leaving from a new location, other than a Little Canada site. Morelan replied that he
would check on why that was changed and contact the inquiring resident. Morelan further
commented that they plan to have a Twins game bus trip once a month for the summer.
There is also a Casino Bus Trip sponsored by the Little Canada Recreation Association for
this upcoming weekend. Councilmember Montour's wife is who to contact if anyone is
interested in going on this bus trip. Seats are still available.
