MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
June 2, 2011
OLD
BUSINESS PLANTING PLAN- UNWEAVE THE WEAVE- MN DOT
Sanders reported that he and Morelan attended the meeting with MN DOT on the evening of
May 10 where they discussed the plan for the planting of buffering trees along Highway 694
as part of the Unweave the Weave project. He stated the budget was cut back and the
majority of the plantings will be placed along the Twin Lake area. Fahey inquired as to the
starting time of these plantings. Sanders commented that they will begin some of the
plantings this year. Don Gagne, a guest, asked if MN DOT would also be removing the
scrub trees in the Unweave the Weave area. Sanders reported that MN DOT will be
removing these scrub trees in several areas along Highway 694. Heikke asked if there
would be a posting on the MN DOT website of their tree planting plan. He noted they did
not have anything posted yet. Sanders thought they would be posting the plan on their
website.
CANADIAN DAYS REQUEST TO REGRADE A PORTION OF SPOONER PARK
Chair Fahey introduced two guests from the Canadian Days Committee, Lynda Beaudoin
and Don Gagne.
Sanders reported that he had not designed a sketch of the grading of the area that Canadian
Days is proposing to be filled and graded. He continued stating the commissioners would
like to view the area during the Canadian Days festival to see how it would affect the
carnival and car show before he made a sketch of the area.
Sanders showed Heikke a current overhead map of the park area and pointed out the areas
the Canadian Days Committee were requesting to grade. Heikke and Sanders both agreed
that any and all grading would have to be graded so as to maintain drainage properly in the
newly graded areas. Heikke questioned whether this proposed grading would eliminate any
trees in the park. Sanders reported that no trees would be tampered with in this proposed
grading. The commissioners discussed the fact that one of the hills in this area is quite steep
and people pushing strollers have a difficult time pushing them uphill, so grading to have a
Tess steep hill could be beneficial for this purpose.
Chair Fahey then suggested that Thursday night of the Ice Cream Social, July 28°i, might be
a good time for the P &R Commissioners, Sanders, and Morelan to meet with the Canadian
Days Committee to illustrate where they wished to have the grading while the festival's
carnival is set up. All in attendance agreed that Thursday evening would be a good meeting
time.
