MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 20, 2011
Blesener asked what the maximum pylon sign size would be for this
property. The City Planner replied that it would be 200 square feet. He
noted, however, that a property can have one freestanding sign per
frontage when the property has multiple frontages. The owners of the
Marketplace Shopping Center are requesting to increase their sign size
from 400 square feet to 484 square feet.
Tim McLaughlin, Grootwassink Real Estate, owner of Marketplace
Shopping Center, noted that the sign has come a long way from when it
was first proposed. He also noted that the time the shopping center
changed from a strip mall to a shopping center, more sign exposure was
needed to its tenants. At that time, the City approved the 400 square foot
pylon.
McGraw asked if the sign diagram dated June 11th is the way the sign will
look, if approved. McLaughlin replied that it was.
There was no one else from the general public present wishing to
comment on this matter.
Upon motion by Montour, seconded by McGraw, the public hearing was
closed.
Blesener felt even though this is a PUD District, the sign that is approved
should meet the ordinance, which is no larger than 200 square feet in size.
Blesener felt that the shopping center tenants would have adequate
visibility with a sign that size. He also felt that a smaller sign would be an
enhancement to the shopping center.
Montour noted that the shopping center has two frontages, therefore,
would be allowed two 200 square foot signs. Montour felt it preferable to
have one pylon sign at the shopping center.
McGraw asked about the existing electrical box at the front of the sign.
McLaughlin indicated that it would be moved and incorporated into a sign
column or covered with EF1S to make it less noticeable.
Montour introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO. 2011 -6 -116 — APPROVING THE AMENDMENT
FOR PUB PERMIT FOR EXPANSION OF FREESTANDING SIGN
FOR THE MARKETPLACE SHOPPING CENTER, 2900 RICE
STREET, AS PROPOSED ON SIGN DIAGRAM DATED JUNE 11,
2011 AND WITHA MAXIMUM SIGN SIZE OF 484 SQUARE FEET
3
