Hanson
www.ci.little-canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Blesener & Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Direks, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: June 4, 2007
RE: Salt /Sand Spreader for #500 Dump Truck
The City purchased the #500 dump truck in 2000 with a plow, wing, and spreader. While
the truck, plow, and wing are still in excellent shape the sander condition has deteriorated
due to the corrosive nature of the salt it spreads. Seven years is longer than the average
life of a spreader; and the extra years can be attributed to the washing and maintenance
habits of our public works employees.
Staff is recommending the purchase of a new salt /sand spreader from Falls Equipment
with installation by J -Craft at the State Bid price of $6550 for the spreader and
installation. The spreader would be identical to the new stainless steel spreader on our
newest dump truck. The stainless steel model should provide extra life and easier
maintenance. It has worked well on our existing truck. The spreaders would be the same
brand and style, which simplifies maintenance and reduces parts inventory
