volunteers associated with the recreation programs, it will probably not cover Canadian Days
Volunteers given the independent nature of the organization and the lack of any substantial City
involvement in the festival operations. Canadian Days does carry Workers' Compensation with
the League and may be able to add this coverage to their policy. I have been in discussions with
the League on this issue and am expecting a response from them regarding coverage and cost
shortly (for Canadian Days separate coverage).
The cost to the City for the Accident Coverage would be approximately $1,000 with an
additional $450 for an optional medical coverage. The coverage provides a disability benefit,
death benefit and an impairment benefit, see page 2 of Exhibit B for details. The benefit
available is capped at $100,000. The City has at least 100 volunteers annually that are associated
with the recreation programs. Thus the cost of coverage would be equivalent to the cost of
coverage for Commissioners. Staff will update the council as to the League's response in
regards to Canadian Days and the merits of providing this coverage can be discussed at that time.
