Little Canada
Fire Department, Inc.
February 18, 2002
Joel Hanson, City Administrator
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN. 55117
325 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, Minnesota 55117
Phone & Fax
(651) 766- 4057
Dear Joel:
We received your memo dated February 411' regarding the suggestion that the fire department
contribute $ 3,400 to fund the needs of Canadian Days. Your memo was discussed during our
meeting on February 11"' by our membership.
The fire department considers the Canadian Days celebration an important part of the city and
has shown their support in many ways over the years.
Several comments and questions were brought up by our members during the discussion. One of
these questioned whether organizations that currently donate all of their gambling proceeds
directly to benefits within the city should be included in your proposal. A donation of this sort
would in essence be made at the expense of future capital purchases. Since we do not have the
ability to raise additional funds through our charitable gambling activities to offset the donation,
we would be forced to include this shortfall in future capital improvement budget requests. We
would like the city's acquiescence in this regard before making a final decision on the matter.
Our membership also expressed their disappointment in not being included in the January 7111
meeting. It was felt that we missed any opportunity to get questions answered or to offer input
from the department's perspective, consequently, no action was taken on your proposal.
As I mentioned earlier, the fire department appreciates the effort Canadian Days puts forth for
our community. We would welcome a request (possibly accompanied by a presentation if they
thought it was necessary) from them for a donation in lieu of the proposal outlined in your
memo. While I can not promise the ultimate outcome, I will speculate (based on our discussion)
that we would probably act favorably to a request from Canadian Days to help fund the
celebration.
Sincerely,
(,..... • Jim Morelan, Fire Chief
cc: Mayor, council, Canadian Days.
