MAYOR
Michael 1. Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600 ADMINISTRATOR
(651) 484 -2177 / FAX: (651) 484 4538 Joel R. Hanson
Email: cityhall@ci .little - canada.mn.us
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Fahey and Members of the City Council
FROM: Joel R. Hanson, City Administrator
DATE: February 4, 2000
RE: Little Canada Road Improvements
In the attached memo from the City Engineer you will note that we are facing right -of-
way constraints regarding the reconstruction of Little Canada Road. This will force some
difficult decisions in order for us to proceed with this project. One solution to these
problems is the acquisition of additional property to facilitate the project. There are two
options to consider in this regard:
1. Acquisition of the homes adjacent to Round Lake at 10 East Little Canada Road
and 30 East Little Canada Road. Ultimately we will acquire these properties
under a voluntary sale basis. We may want to see if we can accelerate this
process to ease the right -of -way constraints in this area and allow for a more
viable project given the long -term nature of the improvement.
2. Acquisition of the Venetian Inn property. The City Engineer is working on an
interim solution that will allow us to build the new roadway without acquiring this
property. This will result in additional cost at the point in time when the right -of-
way becomes available. While I do not advocate acquiring this property without a
redevelopment project, I want to ensure that you are aware of this option before
the design is finalized.
The City Engineer will be prepare to discuss the constraints in greater detail at
Wednesday's meeting. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Page 13
