MetroTrarsit
January 26, 2000
Joel Hanson, City Administrator
City of Little Canada
515 Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 551177
Dear Mr. Hanson:
It is my understanding that you met recently with Aaron Isaacs of the Metro Transit staff to discuss a
transit hub near Rice Street and Little Canada Road. This proposed facility is a recommendation of the
Sector 2 transit study, currently in the final stages of approval. Sector 2 includes all the northern
Ramsey County suburbs and the north half of St. Paul. The purpose of the study is to take a fresh look
at all the transit service in the area, and change it to better fit the needs of local residents.
Specifically, the study calls for a new transit hub along Rice Street between I -694 and Highway 36.
Rice Street is halfway between Rosedale and Maplewood Mall, the other two hubs in this area. As a
rule, hubs should be about 20 -25 minutes apart via local streets, in order to optimally schedule the
buses to make one hour cycles.
Ramsey County has suggested that the permanent hub site should be Rice Street and I694, where their
public works yard is currently located. However, that property will not be available until at least 2004.
In the meantime, an interim site is needed. It must accommodate at least six buses at once. When
Aaron Isaacs met with you recently, you suggested locating the interim hub on First Bank Drive just
west of Market Place. That site would meet Metro Transit's needs. Buses would stay within the public
right of way. Sidewalks, shelters and lighting would be added at Metro Transit's expense.
Little Canada residents would benefit from this hub in the following ways. Because all six buses
would meet at the same time, transfers between the buses are guaranteed. That means that anyone
living on a bus route can conveniently transfer to any other route serving the hub. This makes possible
suburb -to- suburb travel, not presently available. In addition, the expanded service will reach more
destinations from Little Canada than before.
Please let me know if additional information is needed.
Sincerely,
Arthur T.
