MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
JUNE 11, 1998
The Planner indicated that while expanding the CUP may be in the best
interests of the business, it should not put a burden on the residents next
door. The City could place a condition on the CUP that should there be
complaints about the volleyball, the CUP come back for review.
Keith Flanagan, resident of Fluer Royal, reported that his balcony
overlooks Gordies parking lot. Flanagan reported that twice last summer
he called Gordies about people lighting grills in the parking lot, and
Gordies responded and had the grills put out. Once last summer he called
the Sheriff about a fight in the parking lot. The Sheriff didn't respond
until about an hour later, after the fight was over and the patrons went
home. Again he called the Sheriff about smelling marijuana from Gordies
parking lot, and the Sheriff never showed up. Flanagan reported that he is
on the board of directors at Fluer Royal, and several residents have
complained to him about the noise coming from Gordies late at night.
Cossack pointed out that this noise was not the result of volleyball.
Flanagan expressed concern with trash from the parking lot blowing into
the grassy area and becoming an eyesore. Flanagan indicated that he
personally does not have a problem with volleyball play six nights per
week. There have been times when volleyball has extended past 10 P.M.,
and when he called Gordies, they immediately shut down the court.
Flanagan reported that about a year and a half ago when he was president
of the condo association, he wrote a letter to Gordies asking that they get
together and do some landscaping. Gordies never responded to the letter.
Flanagan commented that the original CUP called for some landscaping.
Flanagan indicated that he would like to see additional landscaping or a
fence similar to the one at Hoggsbreath to screen the area. Flanagan
reported that Fluer Royal currently has an arrangement with Gordies for
the use of the grassy area behind the parking lot, and he would like to see
that use continue.
Flanagan reported that the majority of residents at Fluer Royal are elderly
and they are afraid to complain about Gordies. Flanagan stated that he
would like to see landscaping or a fence to contain the trash that blows in
from Gordies parking lot.
Cossack disputed the comments that there is trash coming from Gordies
parking lot, and reported that he walks the property line and picks up the
trash.
Schletty pointed out that the issue before the Commission is that of
amending the CUP to allow for additional nights of volleyball. Schletty
stated that he has not heard Flanagan object to the expansion of the CUP.
3
Page 19
