TONY BENNETT
BOARD OF RAMSEY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
DISTRICT 1
JOE MURPHY
ASSISTANT TO COMMISSIONER
June 4, 1997
Joel Hanson
City Administrator
City of Little Canada
515 East Little Canada Road
Little Canada, MN 55117
Dear Mr. Hanson:
REOE vaJ . ;J,
0''
220 COURT HOUSE
SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA 55102
TEL. (612) 266.8350
FAX (612) 266 -8370
Ramsey County is in the process of looking at sites for an
additional Adult Detention Center. It is the responsibility of the
County Board to select a site and then provide for the bonding
authority in which to build the facility.
There is some confusion as to the procedure that the Ramsey County
Board will use in this regards. Presently, six sites are being
looked at. Five of these sites were presented to the previous
Board; a sixth site, a location at 694 and Rice, was added
unanimously on May 20, 1997. Julio Mangine, the Property Manager
for Ramsey County, is in charge of a study group who will bring
back facts and figures on all of the sites to the County Board on
June 24, 1997. The Chairwoman of the County Board has already
stated no decisions will be made on any of those sites on this
date. After questions and discussion by the County Board, we will
set a time frame to make those decisions.
With the possibility of the maintenance center moving off 694 and
Rice, I requested some details and facts as to whether this site
was a possible building solution. The county owns the land. This
site would also keep the patrol cars that you now pay for in the
suburban area to patrol our streets. Those cars would not have to
go downtown after an arrest. I felt that it was prudent that we
look at all avenues while gathering facts.
I have taken no position on any of the six sites and do not intend
to do so until I have heard the presentation and asked questions on
June 24. I can guarantee you that there will be public hearings on
any site that is under further consideration. And the local
communities and the residents of those local communities will have
input into that selection.
Minnesota's First Home Rule County
pdnletl on rec Amer content
Page 52
