MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
June 1, 1995
ST PAUL
WATER LAND
AVAILABILITY
that it could, but the trees would have to be removed and
they are too big to survive transplantation.
Remerowski asked if any of the 1996 items should be removed
from the list. Johnson stated that the list is not final
yet so she felt the items could be left on it for now.
The Director stated that approximately 75 to 100 additional
parking spaces are needed at Pioneer Park. Johnson stated
that she would prefer expansion to occur on the Centerville
side since that is the main entrance to the park.
Sanders stated that it would be nice to pave the Gervais
Mill Park parking lot off Edgerton Street. He stated that
it would not have to be large and it would clean up the look
of the park. He stated that he has seen cars parking there
already.
Remerowski asked if there was an advantage to having one
contractor do all of the City's paving. Sanders felt that
given the size of our average projects, it was not
necessarily more expensive to bid each project individually.
Remerowski felt that the Commission should obtain some
direction on use of the Park Land Acquisition Fund. He felt
that the Council should be asked about how to use the fund.
The Director felt that the Commission should make a
recommendation to the Council on use of the fund.
Greger thought that it was decided that the City should buy
all the parks that are needed first, then the Park Land
Acquisition Fund could be used to develop parks within the
City.
Hartmann felt that some of the money should be used now to
finish the parks. He felt that if the City waits too long
to finish its parks, the items in the parks now will need to
be replaced. Remerowski agreed.
Remerowski stated that he would like information for the
next meeting from the City's Accountant on the Park Land
Acquisition Fund. He indicated that he would like to know
the balance of the fund and would like a five year history
of the fund to include deposits into the fund and interest
earned. Once this information is obtained, the Commission
can look at the park land that is left to be purchased and
decide what to do with the Park Land Acquisition Fund.
The Director stated that the St. Paul Board of Water
Commissioners is selling two parcels of land east of Rice
Street and south of Country Drive. He indicated that they
would like to know if the City is interested in purchasing
Page 6
