MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
MARCH 7, 2013
Sanders summarized the comments that the track glider be eliminated,
diggers retained, swings located together, slides consist of both short and
long slides, and additional shading be added.
The Director suggested that these comments be taken back to the design
people to incorporate in the Option 1 design. The redraft could then be
presented to the Commission at its April meeting for review and adoption.
The Director indicated that the public is welcomed to attend this meeting
as well.
FIRE BARNS The Parks & Recreation Director reported that he and the City
WARMING Administrator and City Engineer have reviewed the fire barns property
HOUSE and it appears that the fire barns warming house project will be entirely
PROJECT on City or Water Department property and no land acquisition from St.
John's Church will be necessary. This should be confirmed within the
next couple of days.
The Director reported that he has contacted an architect and will be
meeting with him next week to start the process of developing plans for
the new warming house. The Director indicated that staff is also currently
looking at how utilities will be put into the site to support bathroom
facilities.
Maida asked if the warming house project is budgeted for this year. The
Director replied that it was.
BUCHTHORN Sullivan reported that she discussed the availability of grant money for
REMOVAL buckthorn removal with Paul Bachensted of Stantec. He indicated that
there is grant money available, and they would be willing to help the City
apply for a grant. He suggested that the City put together a management
plan which identifies areas where invasive species need removal as well
as how the City would keep these areas under control. Sullivan indicated
that Bachensted also thought the Watershed District may have grant
funding available. Sullivan noted that some grants may require matching
funds from the City. She also noted that in addition to buckthorn there
may be areas where understory trees and shrubs are taking over habitat.
Steinert suggested that as part of the spring park tour the Commission
identify areas that need attention. Sanders stated that once the tour takes
place and these areas are identified, he could put together a management
plan. It was the consensus that the spring park tour be scheduled for May,
4
