Fahey
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Jim LaValle
Steve Morelan
Bob Pedersen
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
In addition to the alternatives mentioned in Mayor Fahey's Memo of November 8, I believe there
is one other alternative that should be explored.
The City is currently pursuing the purchase of two properties in the Round Lake area: 96 West
Little Canada Road (Cardinal) and 56 West Little Canada Road (Willis). Perhaps one of these
homes could be remodeled into a building to house the Historical society. Assuming the
buildings would be demolished anyway, it would give us the advantage of starting with
something; as opposed to building an addition from scratch. Given a choice, the Willis home
(which I believe is the original Cardinal Homestead) may be the better choice. It is one of the
oldest homes left in the City, and has some genuine historic appearance to it. Following are
some of the advantages and disadvantages that I see:
Advantages
1. This may be a less costly capital expenditure than an addition to City Center. At the very
least, it should allow us to "phase in" the relocation of the Society from the Old fire Station over
a period of several years. Once the initial relocation is made, future improvements could be
budgeted for in subsequent years.
2. The Historical Society would be in the Downtown area which would probably result in more
visitors.
3. The Historical Society would be within walking distance of our senior housing which may
help recruit more members for the Sociei(y.
Page 5
