4. The "home" setting may be more conducive to displaying some of the Society's artifacts (i.e.
early kitchen).
5. The Society members could perform routine cleaning, relieving our janitorial crew of this
responsibility.
6. Security at City Center would not be compromised.
7. We would be better able to account for ongoing expenses (utilities, repairs, etc.).
8. We would be preserving a piece of our history by not demolishing one of these buildings.
9. By providing the Society with a "home of their own," they may take more pride in it and be
better custodians of the property (fundraising efforts for improvements, flower planting,
decorations, etc.).
10. Should the Society come up with substantial funding sources in the future, they could
purchase the property from the City.
Disadvantages
1. The Willis property is currently planned on being utilized as a ponding area, and Middle
Street will be extended through the Cardinal property. Perhaps the ponding or Middle Street
could be relocated, or one of the houses could be moved to the SE corner of Little Canada Road
and Middle Street (to date we have not come up with any potential development ideas for that
sight).
2. Either house would need to be brought up to code (UBC and ADA).
3. Parking facilities would need to be improved.
4. Major maintenance may be an issue in the near future (roofing, painting, HVAC, etc.).
5. Office support would be lost (copy machine, office supplies, etc.).
Even if there are no financial benefits to this idea, I think this may be a better alternative than an
addition to City Center. Please give this some thought and see if you can identify any other
issues that should be addressed. If you think this is a viable alternative, please solicit input from
the Historical Society and place this item on the agenda for Council consideration.
cc: Mayor & City Council
Jean Donovan, President Little Canada Historical Society
Page 6
