Hanson
As a result of a recent brainstorming discussion with Steve
Garske, I would like to suggest that we explore several
additional alternatives relative to the Historical Society
Addition. These are:
Alternative 1 - Retain the storage space at the existing fire
hall. Create display cases inside the City Council Chambers
and /or other strategic locations within City Hall (similar to the
one outside the Chamber). Create an annual budget for the
Historical Society to fund movement of materials between the two
locations, changes in displays, etc. This would obviate the need
to build a handicapped bathroom since we are not putting on an
addition.
This alternative should be closely examined since it involves
minimal cost. For example, could we create display cases that
could be closed in such a manner as to be unobtrusive during City
Council meetings. This also may be a feasible short -term
solution while we develop funding sources for an addition if we
determine that is appropriate. Display cases could be reused in
any subsequent addition.
Alternative 2 - Investigate the possibility of leasing commercial
space within the City to house the Historical Society and compare
the long -term rental cost (to be paid by the City) to the capital
cost of adding on the addition plus the operating costs for the
addition. The cost of this leased space could be offset by
donations of fees paid by visitors to the site. I would be
interested in reviewing a cost /benefit analysis on this leasing
issue.
Page 7
