With our proximity to both the public and parochial
schools, we feel we can provide a valuable service by making
history come alive for the children in the elementary
grades. A small Federal Grant was made available to the
City of St.Paul and the Roseville School Districts for the
purpose of studying and comparing diverse ethnic cultures.
It was no accident that West St.Paul, with its long history
of Hispanic neighborhoods and Little Canada, with its
readily available French Canadian history, were chosen to
participate. We have pictures of one room schools and their
pupils. Some of our members attended those same schools and
are able to bring their experiences to the students. The
first Ramsey County Superintendent of Schools, George
Selland, was a member of our community. He recorded many
facts and dates of local history of which we have copies.
We would like to have an area to display church
artifacts. We have many from St.John's Church, which was
certainly the cradle of Little Canada. Did you know that we
have a bench from the first log church? We have chosen the
1930s as a date to re- create a kitchen of that era. We have
a stove, table and ice -box as well as many kitchen tools.
In the same theme, we have a cream separator in working
order and plan to separate whole milk and also make butter
with the cream. Since this was primarily a farming
community, we have acquired many hand and garden tools as
well as farm machinery which can be stored and displayed
elsewhere.
Yes, we do have Army, Navy and Marine uniforms from WW2
vintage, displayed with pride and donated by Little Canada
Veterans of that war.
We extend an invitation to the Council to visit us,
perhaps during our workshop meeting, on our own turf!
S cerely,
Jean Donovan, President
Little Canada Historical Society.
Page 3
