NOTES OF THE MEETING WITH THE LITTLE CANADA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
AND DAVID NYSTUEN, MINNESOTA STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
APRIL 4, 1996
THOSE PRESENT: Jean Donovan
Don Donovan
Kathy Hanson
Ray Hanson
Johanna Meath
Joan Pepin Tschida
Lorraine Rosauer
David Nystuen
Kathy Glanzer
The purpose of this meeting was for David Nystuen of the State
Historical Society to review the collection of the Little Canada
Historical Society and offer comments and suggestions about the
collection. Nystuen was informed that the City Council is considering
the possibility of an addition onto City Hall which would house the
Historical Society, and questions have arisen about the value of the
collection as well as square footage that would be necessary. Initial
discussion has centered on 2,000 square feet. Nystuen felt that 2,000
square feet was appropriate pointing out that the Historical Society's
collection will continue to grow.
Nystuen pointed out that if the Historical Society gets more space, it
may find that people will make more offers of things for their
collection. Sometimes the things offered are items that someone no
longer wants, but cannot bring themselves to throw away. Nystuen
suggested that the Historical Society develop a strong collection
policy outlining what it will take and what it will not. If this
policy is in writing and it is applied consistently, people will
understand if their offer is turned down. For example, the policy can
state that the Historical Society does not collect farm equipment or
antique cars because of limited space. The policy should state the
sorts of items that the Historical Society is looking for. This
policy can be run in the local newspaper or City newsletter so people
will know what the Historical Society is looking for. Having a policy
will also make the HS look more professional. If the HS is looking
for photographs, the policy should state that it would like permission
to copy photos, and will return the original back to its owners.
Nystuen also suggested that the Historical Society develop a mission
statement which outlines what it is trying to do. Nystuen stated that
the HS should never assume that people know what it is doing. This
mission statement should also be publicized. The mission statement
should indicate the HS is not just a special group open to a select
number of people, but open to anyone interested in joining.
Rosauer pointed out if the City provides space at City Hall, the HS
will have more exposure.
Nystuen next suggested the HS develop a long -range plan, looking ahead
1
Page 4
