Johnson stated that she supported a trail to <br />get from Jackson to the waterworks area and a smaller link <br />from Jackson to Australian. <br />The City Administrator stated that with Australian, the trail <br />would have to be entirely on the street. This could be <br />accomplished when Australian is rebuilt, which should be in <br />1997 or 1999. He also pointed out the narrow right of way on <br />Australian of 40 feet. Typically, the street width would only <br />be 28 feet and parking issues would need to be evaluated. <br />Remerowski made a motion to recommend to the Council that the <br />trail be completed from the waterworks property to Jackson <br />Street and Jackson Street to Australian and Lakeshore, in <br />conjunction with road improvements. <br />Motion seconded by Holm <br />Motion carried 5 - 0. <br />Sanders suggested finishing the waterworks trail with a more <br />"natural" substance such as gravel or wood chips because it is <br />a more natural area. Sanders also suggested discussing the <br />McMenemy Street area with regard to trails, stating many <br />people walk the area from McMenemy to Viking Drive to <br />Edgerton. <br />Johnson made a motion to request that a cost estimate be given <br />to the Parks and Recreation Commission for wood chips to <br />complete the waterworks trail east of McMenemy. <br />Motion seconded by Remerowski. <br />Motion carried 5 - 0. <br />Johnson asked the Commission whether there were any other <br />proposed trail areas warranting discussion. <br />Sanders wondered if a trail should be shown on North Owasso. <br />Remerowski mentioned that Edgerton Street will take people out <br />into Vadnais Heights and out to Lake Vadnais. He revealed <br />that many people are not aware that there is going to be an <br />extensive cross country ski, biking, and hiking trail, and <br />fishing pier slated to occur in two to three years. <br />Johnson remarked that Edgerton should remain a bike trail, as <br />designated. She felt it is no longer treated as such, and in <br />the vicinity of Edgerton and Highway 36, the bike trail has <br />been converted into a turn lane for cars. The City <br />Administrator suggested contacting Ramsey County regarding <br />this problem. Sanders commented he thought 6 feet on each <br />side of Edgerton was designated as bike trail. Johnson stated <br />she runs in this area, and feels it is no longer safe. <br />Rajanen remarked a change in speed limit in this area may <br />help. He stated the speed limit at this intersection is 40 <br />m.p.h., and as soon as you cross over Highway 36 going south, <br />he believed the speed limit dropped to 30 m.p.h.
