MINUTES <br />PLANNING COMMISSION <br />NOVEMBER 14, 1996 <br />Montour asked about the other facilities in <br />Bloomington, Fridley and Tonka Bay. Schiltz stated <br />the Bloomington store, at Old Shakopee Road and Old <br />Cedar Avenue has 20,000 square feet of space. 5,000 <br />square feet is a separate building for their retail <br />store. Another building has 2,000 square feet which <br />is rented to a liquor store, and the remainder is a <br />display area for All American Recreation products. <br />The Tonka Bay facility is 5,000 square feet of retail <br />sales space. The Fridley facility is the retail <br />production area. <br />Knudsen asked if all the staining would be done in <br />Little Canada, and if the products would ship to the <br />other locations. Schiltz replied the custom - stained <br />furniture and custom - stained pool tables would be done <br />at the Little Canada facility. He stated currently, <br />the Fridley store serves as the complete retail <br />production area. <br />Keis asked if the Fridley store will remain open. <br />Schiltz replied he may keep the Fridley store open for <br />the summer season so not to lose potential customers. <br />Keis asked about a St. Paul store. Schiltz stated the <br />St. Paul phone number forwards to the Bloomington <br />store. He stated it is a research phone number to see <br />how much business is obtained from advertising. He <br />stated as a result of advertising, they are prompted <br />to direct their business to this area. <br />Knudsen asked what was planned for the front of the <br />building, in reference to Keis' earlier concerns. <br />Schiltz replied he did not have a problem with <br />improving the landscape, as long as the exposure to <br />Rice Street did not suffer. <br />Grittman stated his concern was with the type of signs <br />being installed. He pointed out that currently, there <br />is a mishmash of box signs on a pole. To coordinate <br />the signs for All American Recreation and others <br />sharing the building would do a lot to dress up the <br />area. Schiltz stated he is not opposed to a nice <br />pylon sign. He stated the company just spent $18,000 <br />for a sign for the Bloomington store, and realizes the <br />benefit a nice sign provides. <br />Schiltz stated he is new to the Little Canada area, <br />and feels this area would be a plus to the business. <br />He stated the business is upscale, and caters to <br />clientele who can afford expensive recreational items. <br />He stated that many individual sales are in excess of <br />$5,000. <br />Schiltz stated that taking Champion Auto into account, <br />Page 15 <br />
