MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
MAY 2, 2013
existing trail at the west edge of the site and indicated that the plan has
been to extend that trail east along Little Canada Road. Beyond that,
Sanders noted that the Commission has not put together a plan for
development of this park area, other than discussion about open space,
trails, landscaping, and park benches. Sanders reported that the grade
drops from Little Canada Road to the lake. In planning a memorial at
Round Lake, the grade changes will have to be considered. Sanders
indicated that some parking would have to be provided, and it would be
his thought that a couple of drive -off parking spaces could be added to the
site, rather than installing a full parking lot. Sanders informed the
Commission that he has volunteered to work with the Committee to
provide some ideas and design input.
Maida expressed some concern about parking. Sanders again stated that
he felt a couple of pull -off parking spaces would be preferable to a full
parking lot given the existing grades of the site. Heikke noted the
likelihood that there may be some larger events at the memorial. Sanders
suggested that for special events it may be possible to work with the
ownership of the commercial property across the street to provide parking.
Maida asked how the memorial would be funded. Sanders reported that
the committee is discussing various fundraising ideas such as a buy -a-
brick program.
The Parks & Rec Director stated that he felt this was a good site for a
veterans' memorial, noting that other than the extension of trails through
this site, the City did not have a specific park development plan for this
location. The Director reported on the history of the City's acquisition of
this property as it became available, noting that there are a couple of
additional sites yet to be acquired.
Vang asked how the idea for a veterans' memorial was proposed. Sanders
reported that a citizen approached the City Council with this idea, and the
Council authorized the formation of a committee to study the issue and
develop a plan. Fahey asked the timetable for completion of the
memorial. Sanders reported that there is no definite timetable. The
Director indicated that the committee has had a few meetings thus far, and
indicated that the process will take some time. The committee has
discussed trying to fund the memorial without City money, but funding is
still being discussed. The Director indicated that he will have past
meeting minutes sent to the Commissioners as well as put them on the
mailing list for future minutes and agendas. The Director informed the
Commissioners to feel free to attend any of the committee meetings.
2
