LOU McKENNA
Director
ROGER VIK
Asst. Director
DEPARTMENT OF
TAXATION AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION
COUNTY OF RAMSEY
OFFICE OF
ELECTIONS AND LICENSES
DATE: April 15, 1987
TO: All City and Town Clerks
FROM: Joan M. Pelzer, Superviso
SUBJECT:
APR 16 1987
CITY OF
LITTLE CANADA
Minutes of Voting Equipment Task Force Meeting
113 Court House
St. Paul, Minnesota 55102
2984181
April 8, 1987
A meeting of the Voting Equipment Task Force was held Wednesday, April 8, at the
new Maplewood City Hall. Sixteen persons were in attendance.
A summary of where the County stands in regard to voting equipment was as follows:
159 Optical Scan Precincts
38 Lever Machine Precincts
9 Punch Card Precincts
6 Paper Ballot Precincts
1 Precinct No Voters
Based on price difference between paper ballot and optical scan ballot in volume,
the county will furnish optical scan ballots for absentee_ ballots county -wide and
optical scan ballots for paper ballot precincts. With one k:Lnd of ballot, it will
be easier to coordinate and do the rotation on the ballots. This means that cities
having 1988 municipal elections must get their list of candidates to the County as
soon as possible after filing closes. It is also possible that we could have a
June Primary in 1988. This would move the filing dates up.
The county will purchase the optical scan support equipment -prom burner, P.C.,
printer, and related hardware and software. The county is willing to go before
the County Board to request funds for 7 extra optical scan units to be used if
a machine goes down during an election. We requested that the cities talk to their
mayor and city council people to tell them that optical scan is what they want and
to please relay this information to the County Commissioners. This would help the
county when requesting extra funds.
In even numbered years, the County will work on ballot format, rotation, order ballots
from the printer, and burn the chips for the prom packs. This must be coordinated
and is the county's responsibility.
Page 6
