n' RICE PET CLINIC AND HOSPITAL, P.A.
Canineā¢Pa- e1ue -rus issaa deadly and highly contagious disease that can have devastating
effects in dogs. It affects dogs of all ages, though pups suffer the most. Symptoms
include severe vomitting, anorexia, diarrhea (hemorrhagic) and rapid dehydration.
Mortality may run as high as 7.5 percent with some animals dying _of congestive heart
failure and _Ieaving recovered oun er do s with heart defects.
Canine Parvovirus spreads primarily through dogs by direct contact or contact with
fecal material. The virus can survive for years in the environment and is extremely
resistant to heat up to 180 °F. and disinfeciants..(a 10% solution of sodium hypo -
chlorite appears to be effective).
The infection was first implicated in many severe outbreaks of disease in 1978. It has
since been emerging,as an important disease throughout the world.
Canine parvovirus is now here in Minnesota and signs indicated that it is spreading
rapidly. A vacine is available and isgiven twice, two to four weeks apart. It is there-
fore necessary to vaccinate our pets before they have contact with carrier animals
or their waste products.
Please phone soon for an appointment:
Telephone 484 6222
