MEMORANDUM
TO: File
FROM: David Licht
DATE: 10 February 1983
RE: Transportation - Little Canada Road
FILE N0: 758.11
The following is a summary of a meeting held on 7 February 1983 between
Little Canada staff and MnDOT staff. Attendance - Joe Chlebeck, Don
Carley, Roger Glanzer, David Licht, Jerry Zack, Gene Frederick and
Earl VanBerkom.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the present bottle neck
being encountered on the Little Canada Road Bridge crossing I -35E.
Mr. VanBerkom outlined two potential alternatives which MnDOT is looking
at relative to expanding the bridge. One alternative involves the
creation of an additional lane which would be internally. The second
alternative involves a four lane bridge (two lane addition) with sidewalk
which would allow free movement of left -turn lanes through signals and
not blocking through traffic. Mr. Zack of the Highway Department stated
that MnDOT may possibly approach the City or the County on participation
in bridge construction. A new policy is now being drafted by tInDOT
which will address this.
Mr. Licht stated that since present ADT on the bridge is 12,000 and
the projection of ADT is 17,000 by the year 2005, it would make little
sense to pursue only a one lane addition to the bridge. Mr. Zack and
the balance of MnDOT staff generally agreed and construction and the
possible closing during construction was discussed. It was anticipated
that the bridge could be closed as much as three to four months and
that arrangements for emergency vehicles would have to be made during
this period.
Also discussed was Country Drive and the access problems which are
created by this north bound movement off of Little Canada Road. The
possible expansion of Little Canada Road eastward from I -35E was also
discussed. It was generally concluded, however, that this was a county
matter which the City and county should pursue.
1nn3
CITY OF
[LE CANADA
