64 <br />architect or engineer.102 <br />6. Construction management promotes the harmonious use <br />of union and nonunion contractors on the same job. Because <br />the owner, unlike a general contractor, does not have con- <br />tracts with the building trades, it is possible to have two <br />gates on the project. (A gate is considered the point of <br />access for the respective trade contractors to the job <br />site. Establishment of a separate gate for union contrac- <br />tors is done because labor agreements allow union members to <br />picket a project only at the point of entry to the project <br />site.) One gate would be for union contractors while the <br />other for nonunion.103 It is even possible that only one <br />gate may be necessary if good management skills are availed <br />upon the trades and their cooperation is received.104 <br />7. CM promotes good communication. The construction <br />manager establishes communication channels for the entire <br />project, often acting as facilitator in meetings and helping <br />each specialist to understand the perspective of others.
