MINUTES
Planning Commission
Dec. 6, 1984
Ba1.1f1.elds
(Cont.)
for additional ballfields to satisfy a need for one or two hours in
the evening. Costa did not feel that the City should take prime
industrial land for the fields.
Mrs. Timmons pointed out that the City has the highest percentage of
multiple family dwellers in the Metro area. Timmons stated that kids
go along with this fact. Costa stated that he never sees these kids
in Spooner Park.
Mrs. Kingsbury stated that if the City has places for children to
play, then the incidence of violence goes down.
Mrs. Zoch disagreed that the Auge property was prime industrial property.
Zoch stated that the cost of the property was a lot less an acre than
other industrial land that was considered. Zoch also stated that the
plan Larry Lee submitted to the Park Commission was considered too
expensive by the Commission for two ballfields.
Mr. Costa asked if outside tournaments were being considered for Little
Canada. 'ors. Zoch stated that the Park Commission was considering a
family park.
Mr. Davison pointed out that the School District takes up a lot of
property in Little Canada that is not taxed. Davison stated that
since the School District has taken so much from the City, they
should give something in return, like selling Spooner Park to Little
Canada.
Mr. Bob DeBasc stated that the School District in the past has done
just what the School District wants and what is best for them.
Mr. Costa pointed out the 80 acres of property that the School District
owns that is sitting vacant.
Mr. Herkenhoff asked what the School District would do with Spooner
Park. Mr. DeBace stated that at one time he saw a plan for a junior
high on this property that would fit into Spooner Park without disturbing
the improvements that the City has made to it.
Mr. DeBace also stated that at one time the City approach the School
District about this 80 acres of property. The School District felt
that they were better off sitting on the property than selling it
to the City and having to buy it back in 5 years time.
It was suggested that the City try to get more representation on the
School Board.
Ir. Herkenhoff suggested that the City try to get a petition going
by the residents GE Little Canada requesting that the School District
sell Spooner Park.
Page -7-
4
A
