COMMUNITY TRANSIT PLANNIING GRANT PROGRAM
IN BRIEF
The Community Transit Planning Grant Program, sponsored by the Regional
Transit Board (RTB), has been established to enlist community involvement in
planning new and innovative methods for meeting their present and future
transit needs. The program will provide funding to selected communities for the
purpose of planning transit services.
The RTB anticipates funding 3 to 4 Community Transit Planning Grants in 1989, and
has allocated S 150,000 to the project. Communities are invited to compete for
the funds, which will be awarded to the most promising proposals submitted.
Matching funds and /or in -kind contributions are encouraged but not required.
The Participants
Grants are available to any local unit of government ( county, city, or township)
within the metropolitan transit taxing district. Experience shows that transit grant
programs of this type have the best chance for success when they are
undertaken with the support of the local community. Local business, civic and
community groups should work through their respective local unit of
government if interested in submitting a proposal. Joint venture proposals that
encompass more than one local unit of government are encouraged.
Eligible Projects
Types of projects eligible for funding under the Community Transit Planning
Program include but are not limited to the following:
• Examination of new services including regular route, subscription
bus, community circulators, dial -a -ride, reverse commute service,
suburb to suburb circulators, rural circulators, and other new
services communities may identify.
• Restructuring existing transit services that focus on serving local
needs.
• Examination of ridesharing and travel demand management
strategies.
Projects should be coordinated with existing service and /or service providers
where applicable. Financial assistance is limited to planning. Funding for
implementation will be a separate process with the operating costs
programmed into future budget requests using the adopted RTB cost sharing
arrangements.
Application Procedure
There are no special forms necessary to submit your proposal.
