MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
March 8, 1990
Bendel recommended approval of the Conditional Use
Permit requested by Slumberland to allow retail sales
in an Industrial Park District of home furnishings from
the area within the Slumberland building designated as
retail space in their original plan subject to
compliance with the recommendations of the City Planner
as contained in his report dated March 5, 1990.
Motion seconded by Garske.
Motion carried 5 - 2. Costa and DeLonais voted
against.
SIGN Mr. Paul Kaufman, Slumberland, and Mr. Tom Rubleson,
VARIANCE Sign Consultants, appeared before the Commission
SLUMBERLAND requesting a variance to the Sign Ordinance to allow
construction of a sign 204 square feet in size having a
height of 33 feet. The maximum allowed under the Sign
Ordinance would be 200 square feet in size with a
height of 25 feet.
Rubleson reported that the reason the sign area is
proposed at 204 square feet is because of the spacing
required for the lighting within the sign. Due to
spacing requirements, if the size of the sign were
reduced, it would have to be reduced significantly less
than the 200 square feet allowed by the Ordinance.
However, Rubleson stated that the sign may be able to
be constructed to be 201 square feet in size. Rubleson
also reported that the height variance is being
requested since the Slumberland property is lower than
the adjacent freeway system.
DeLonais was concerned that whenever a variance to the
Sign Ordinance is requested, it is suggested that the
Sign Ordinance be amended to meet the applicant's
demand.
The City Planner pointed out that he did not believe a
hardship existed to warrant granting the variance
request, and his recommendation is that the Slumberland
sign meet the requirements of the Sign Ordinance.
Bendel pointed out previous discussion about the Fina
sign and visibility from the freeway.
The Planner pointed out that the Ordinance allows a
pylon to be 30 feet in height if the property on which
the pylon is located has a direct shared property line
Page 6
