MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
March 8, 1990
VARIANCE FOR
ACCESSORY
BUILDINGS
FUEL ECONOMY
with a freeway or is within 600 feet of a freeway
interchange. The Planner reported that the Slumberland
property does not meet either one of those
requirements.
Garske pointed out that the existing Slumberland
signage is very visible and questioned the need for the
extra height for the pylon.
Kaufman replied that the existing signage is not
visible from the west and does not indicate the retail
center.
Costa asked if the base of the pylon would be below the
grade of Centerville Road.
Kaufman replied that the base of the pylon would
probably be at the same grade as Centerville Road, but
pointed out that the highway is at a higher grade than
the Slumberland property.
Costa and Herkenhoff agreed that the existing
Slumberland signage is very visible, and questioned the
need for the variance requested.
DeLonais stated that he was opposed to the variance.
Drabik asked if there were any restrictions on how far
back the sign could be from the road, pointing out that
there may be a higher elevation on the site where the
sign could be erected.
The City Planner replied that the Sign Ordinance allows
an additional five feet in total height for setting the
sign back 15 feet. However, maximum sign height is
limited to 30 feet.
Mr. Herkenhoff recommended denial of the variance for
sign area and height requested by Slumberland based on
the recommendation of the City Planner indicating that
no hardship exists warranting a variance.
Motion seconded by Costa.
Motion carried 7 - 0.
Mr. Don Johnson, Fuel Economy, appeared before the
Commission requesting a variance to allow the
construction of two additional accessory storage
buildings. The proposal exceeds the 30 percent
Page 7
