MINUTES
PLANNING COMMISSION
JANUARY 11, 1990
That motion died for lack of a second.
Bendel pointed out that if the City uses aesthetics as
a basis for granting a hardship, a precedent will be
set.
Drabik pointed out that it is possible for Mr. Valento
to build homes on his lots without a variance. Drabik
again pointed out the variance request which was denied
for Mr. Arcilla.
Costa pointed out that in the Arcilla variance request
the neighbors were opposed to the variance being
granted.
Mr. Melancon stated that he was opposed to the Valento
variance request since granting the variance will not
ensure that homes would be located further away from
his father's property.
Costa stated that the Planning Commission is here to
help people solve their problems, and pointed out that
in this instance the problems were not created by Mr.
Valento.
Bendel stated that the Commission must enforce the
statutes. Drabik agreed, and pointed out that all
citizens should be treated equally.
Costa did not feel denying Valento's request was
treating him equally.
Herkenhoff pointed out that if Valento can construct
larger homes on the lots, these homes will bring in
more tax dollars to the City.
Bendel pointed out that larger homes will make the area
more congested, and pointed out that the street
right -of -way area has already been reduced from the
standard. Bendel stated that if the variance is
granted, he believed that Mr. Valento will build larger
houses on the lots than could otherwise be built.
Costa pointed out that that is an assumption.
Pedersen pointed out that if Mr. Valento had additional
facts which he wanted to present, he could have had a
representative attend the meeting for him to present
these facts.
Page 7
