`CVG y Gi/ 29eitte renae a
515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117 -1600
(612) 484 -2177 / FAX: (612) 484 -4538
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Hanson and Members of the City Council
FROM: Dave Harris, Public Works Superintendent
DATE: May 17, 1991
RE: Recycling of Plastics
MAYOR
Raymond G. Hanson
COUNCIL
Beverly Scalze
Bill Blesener
Rick Collova
Jim LaValle
ADMINISTRATOR
Joel R. Hanson
On Thursday, May 16, I met with the haulers to discuss the
implementation of plastics recycling in the City of Little
Canada. The haulers are more than willing to start
recycling plastics. However, they did point out that
recycling plastics is costly. There is not a great market
or demand for the plastics at this time.
I polled many of the cities around us to see if they
recycled plastics, when they implemented the program, and
what the added cost was for this service. The average cost
for adding plastics to the recycling programs was
30 cents per month. After discussing this with the
haulers, they agreed that 30 cents was an acceptable
figure. Also, after speaking with the cities, I have found
that plastics recycling has been very well received by the
residents.
At this time, I am recommending that the City of Little
Canada start recycling plastics effective July 1, 1991 and
increase the recycling charge to $2.25 per month. The
July 1 effective date will give staff enough time to put
together a recycling brochure for plastics and get it
delivered to all the residents in the City.
If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free
to contact me.
DBH:kpv
Page 64
