DIRECTOR OF PARKS AND RECREATION <br />October 24, 1990 <br />Page Three <br />POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS <br />College degree in Park and Recreation Administration or related field plus at <br />least five years of progressively responsible experience in developing parks <br />and supervising recreation programs; Masters degree in Recreation and Park <br />Administration desirable. <br />Knowledge of the objectives and ideals of public recreation including a <br />thorough understanding of the diverse activities which constitute a community <br />recreation program. <br />Knowledgeable of the facilities and equipment needed in a broad recreation <br />program and the proper physical planning maintenance and arrangements of park <br />areas. <br />Working knowledge of principles and practices involved in park and recreation <br />management. <br />Ability to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships <br />with advisory groups, City officials and the general public. <br />Ability to train, supervise and motivate department and volunteer personnel. <br />Experience working in unionized setting desirable. <br />Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and through written <br />correspondence and reports. <br />Ability to prepare, analyze and administer budgets; prepare reports and keep <br />records. <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED <br />Works under the general supervision of the City Manager. <br />SUPERVISION OF OTHERS <br />Direct supervision over: <br />Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation <br />Department Secretary <br />Part -time Clerk Typist <br />Nature Center Staff <br />Heritage Center Caretaker <br />Indirect supervision over all other Park and Recreation Department employees <br />and volunteers. <br />RESPONSIBILITY FOR PUBLIC CONTACT <br />Involves heavy contact with the public, requiring a high degree of tact, <br />courtesy and good judgement. <br />Page 31 <br />
