LITTLE CANADA
PARKS AND RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
515 Little Canada Road / Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
Telephone: (612) 484 -2177 / Fax: 484 -4538
May 21, 1993
JIM MORELAN, Director
JACK FITZGERALD, Asst. Director
DIANE HUSAK, Asst. Director, Girls Activities
TO: Mayor Hanson and Members of the City Council
FROM: Jim Morelan, Parks and Recreation Director
RE: Music at Spooner Park
I have been working on putting a schedule together for having music
in the bandshell at Spooner Park. It was discussed last night at the
Park and Recreation Commission meeting, and the Commission is very
much in favor of the plan.
I am attempting to hire bands to play for three performances in
Spooner Park. Jan Sherman has given me some very valuable help in
this matter in regards to selecting the types of music that should be
entertaining to a broad group of people.
We have tentatively scheduled performances for the evenings of August
11, 18, and 25. August was chosen so as to not conflict with youth
ballgames at the Little Canada School fields. Wednesday's were
chosen as the potentially most popular night to attract audiences,
without competing with neighboring cities' programs.
Money for the bands will be partially obtained through a music
performance trust fund sponsored by the Musician's Union. Under that
program, the trust fund will pay 35% of the cost of the band. The
City's portion will be from $250 to $300 per performance. This will
depend on how many performers are in the band. The cost of the first
performance will be further decreased from a donation from Little
Canada Charity Plus of half our cost, or approximately $125 to $150.
This will leave an expenditure by the City of up to $750 for the
three performances. The Park and Recreation Commission feels that we
should commit to all three performances in order to build on the
participation. With the Council's commitment to funding, I will
continue negotiating contracts with various bands.
If you have any questions concerning the program, please contact me
prior to the Council meeting.
Page 96
