TO: CMDR JERRY BERGERON
FROM: LT JIM DALY
DATE: 3 -16 -94
SUBJECT: LITTLE CANADA PLANNING COMMISSION
According to the FBI, in 1991 more than a third of the
convenience stores in the U.S. were robbed. More than 90% of the
time the robber used force, a visible weapon, or at least the
threat of a weapon.Convenience stores are often attractive crime
targets, especially when adjacent to an Interstate escape route.
If Little Canada is considering allowing a 24 -hour service
station at Little Canada Road and 35 -E, they might want to
consider the following, either as use conditions, or as ordinance
changes.
1. Keeping no more than $50 cash on hand, and posting a sign to
that effect
2. A drop or time delay safe to store any cash over $5o
3. Parking lots must be brightly lighted
4. Sales area must be visible from the street
5. There must be a robbery detection camera on site
6. Two or more clerks on duty from 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM
7. The clerk should be behind a bullet -proof glass partition
At 4:30 AM on February 9, 1994, there was an armed robbery at
the Sinclair station at Little Canada Road and 35 -E. One clerk
was on duty. A surveillance camera was in operation, and the
robbers tried to take the video tape out of the VCR. Over $100 in
cash was taken, along with 66 packs of cigarettes. The juvenile
robbers did use a gun, and were apprehended shortly after the
robbery.
Other 24 hour convenience stores in Little Canada do not seem
to have a problem with juveniles hanging around the premises. The
lure of late night fast food places seems to be greater than that
of convenience stores.
Page 39
