Hanson
RE: Fire Department Grant Application to Board of Government
Innovation and Cooperation
The Vadnais Heights Fire Department has taken the lead in
submitting an application to the Board of Government Innovation
and Cooperation for a $100,000 grant which would assist in the
establishment of a Geographic Information System (GIS). This
system would assist Fire Departments and County Dispatch in
providing pertinent information regarding fire scene management.
Based on a meeting with Jerry Auge of the Vadnais Heights Fire
Department, representatives of the Little Canada Fire Department,
our City Engineers, and Dave Harris, this appears to be a very
worthwhile project. It also douctails nicely into the computer -
aided dispatch project the Fire Department was already working on
which has been funded through the 10% Fund. Based on a
preliminary ranking by the State, it appears this application has
a very good chance of being approved.
There are some local costs to be shared as a result of this
project. The shared consultant cost would be covered by the Fire
Department under our CAD allocation. The purchase of the
County's GIS data for Little Canada would be covered by the City
under our mapping update program already in progress. (We were
proposing to purchase this information for our own use for City
mapping purposes. Once this is done, we can easily share it with
the Fire Department for their proposed uses.)
Attached is other information regarding the application as well
as a letter I would like authority to send on behalf of our City
indicating our support. It is my recommendation that we strongly
support this application.
JRH:kpv
Enclosure
Page 38
