Joel Hanson
From: John Paul Gille <jpgille @paulsonclark.com>
Sent: Tuesday, November 12, 2013 5:44 PM
To: Joel Hanson
Cc: Bruce Clark; Dan Paulson; Rick Mersch
Subject: RE: Structural Evaluation
Hello Mr. Hanson -
We do a lot of Public Works buildings and would be happy to assist you in any way we can. That being said, based on
the information you provided us we have made some comments on your scope items below, and want to let you know
up front that we think it is highly unlikely that the building in question would be suitable as a Salt /Sand Storage Building
without significant modifications. If you would like us to visit the site, observe the condition of the building, and
document our opinions in writing our effort would probably be in the $800 - $1,200 range.
Feel free to call me to discuss.
Thanks - JP
John Paul Gille, P.E.
Structural Department Manager
Cell 952.200.2468
PAULSON & CLARK ENGINEERING, INC.
2352 East County Road J
White Bear Lake, Minnesota 55110
Tel 651/407 -6056 ext. 207 Fax 651/407 -6476
Original message
From: Joel Hanson <joel.hanson @ci .little- canada.mn.us>
Date: 11/08/2013 4:50 PM (GMT- 06:00)
To: Bruce Clark <bclark(a@aulsonclark.com>
Subject: Structural Evaluation
The City of Little Canada would like to obtain a quote for structural engineering services to help us evaluate the possible
re -use of an existing building with our new Public Works Building to be constructed next year. Specifically, we acquired
a site with a number of buildings on it. Most will be demolished. However, the NE corner of the property has a building
addition that was constructed in 1993. It is 6,270 square feet in size, The sidewall height and door area may make it
suitable for re -use (at least when compared to the other structures). I have attached the building plans for the structure
in question (it is the crossed hatched area on the first sheet). I have also attached an aerial view of the site.
It should be noted that this building has loading docks and we recognize that grading would be necessary to make it
directly accessible for vehicle access. If that triggers any structural concerns, we would want you to advise us
accordingly.
Here is a quick work scope we would like address:
• Can the floor, as constructed, handle weight of equipment storage /vehicular access? A 5" slab on grade is not
ideal but would probably perform acceptably for a while.
• Could the building accommodate road salt storage in terms of the floor's load bearing capacity as well as the
impact of moisture and salt on the structure itself? (Note: We typically purchase 250 tons of salt a year. We
1
