Demonstration Plantings at Sites in Several
Communities - using volunteers we have
completed wetland and prairie plantings at Willow
Lake Nature Preserve, Vadnais Heights, Target
Pond and Kohlman Creek, North St. Paul, Gervais
Mill Pond, Little Canada, and Sackett Park, St. Paul.
Workshops on Caring for the Wetland in Your
Back Yard - workshops were developed and piloted
this year at Willow Lake Preserve that can be repeated
in other communities in the future.
Development of Model Wetland Buffers Ordinance
developed at the request of the City of Maplewood,
this model ordinance has now been adopted and
enforced, and used by other Metro Area cities, too.
It is available to all cities in the Watershed.
Completion of Citywide Ecological Management
Recommendations and Open Space Policy
Guidelines - intensive work was completed with the
City of Maplewood this year that the city will use to
manage its own lands and review development
proposals. These recommendations could be used by
other cities in the Watershed as well.
Completion of Ecologically -Based Design Projects -
developed and implemented designs for Veterans
Park in White Bear Lake, and for local alternatives to
traditional lawns, including individual residences, a
private developer, and local church.
Assistance to H.B. Fuller Company - assisted H.B.
Fuller with stormwater, wetlands, and lake management
as their corporate facilities expand in the Watershed.
Strategies demonstrate methods that could be used at
other corporate sites.
In addition to our work with local communities, the Phalen
Chain of Lakes Watershed Project has received significant
attention from state and national groups as a model for local
cooperation, innovation, and management of natural resources.
Page 8
