Schact reported that the County's standard maintenance project
would be two twelve -foot driving lanes with three -foot gravel
shoulders on either side. In some cases, similar improvements have
been done which are slightly wider.
A resident suggested that a one -way option be considered between
Edgerton Street and Arcade.
One resident reported that it is dangerous to walk or bike around
Gervais now given the limited pavement area.
Hedlund pointed out that the road is dangerous with two -way
traffic, and pointed out that in addition to walkers and bikers,
there are property owners and children crossing back and forth
between their houses and lake -front property.
Schact reported that in his recollection only one County road was
turned into a one -way, and the County then turned that road over to
the City.
A property owner was concerned for the loss of trees, and felt more
effort should be made to preserve trees.
One property owners pointed out that the majority of the trees that
would have to come down are in front of his property. That
property owner asked what the DNR might have to say about cutting
down the trees, pointing out that the DNR informed him he would
have to have a permit in order to cut any tree within 75 feet of
the lake.
Claudia Drabik suggested that the road bed be shifted over as far
as possible to avoid trees.
Schact reported that the estimate for removal of 14 trees is the
worst -case scenario, and it may be possible to shift the road and
save most of these trees. This will depend on the location of the
right -of -way.
Karolyn Kingsbury asked if an environmental impact statement was
necessary, pointed out that the additional asphalt will result in
the use of more sand and salt.
Schact estimated that there would be 20% more run -off from the
additional pavement, but pointed out that shoulder erosion would be
eliminated.
Dale Kingsbury stated that increasing the pavement width from 20
feet to 32 feet would be a 60% increase.
Schact pointed out that at a minimum the County wants a 24 foot
paved surface with two three -foot shoulders. If the City wants the
paved shoulders, the County will install them.
9
Page 64
